Owl Babies

Here is a video of the book for you to enjoy.

At the end of last term we read the big book "Owl Babies" by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Patrick Benson. It is a great story and we loved reading it together. We used lots of expression when reading it, pretending to be the characters. We enjoyed the illustrations - and especially the faces of Owl Mother, Percy, Sarah and Bill. We made our own owl baby pictures - and here they are nesting on branches in Room 25.

We used white paint and dabbed it onto black paper with little sponges. The eyes and beaks we drew with brown pastel and we used black glue for the pupils.

Owl Mother - Our Writing

We did some writing - pretending we were the Owl Mother. We used a framework to help us, using sentence starters. We tried to imagine we were her, and how she would use her senses when she was out hunting for food for her family.

I saw a shiny dragonfly.
I heard a sneaky mouse.
I wonder if my baby owls are still awake.

Our Visit From Constable Viv

Constable Viv visited us and showed us the important things she has to keep herself safe while doing her job. She wears a uniform, and explained that if you ever need help you can ask a person in a uniform.

Hatupatu

We read a shared big book called Hatupatu by Ron Bacon and Manu Smith. It was a fantastic story, which was set near Rotorua. We decided to make our own Birdwoman that we will hang in our room. We used bright colours when we painted the feathers for the body.

The children gluing the feathers onto Birdwoman.
Colouring Birdwoman's feet.
A close up of the feathers being added to Birdwoman's wings.
Putting some of the final touches on her face.
A team effort - finishing her face.

Planting Out Native Seedlings

We helped Room 14, the Kakariki Club Gardeners and other students to plant 1300 native tree seedlings as part of our trees for survival project.

We learnt lots about how to plant a very small seedling, thanks to the lovely Room 14 children. It is amazing to think that these little plants will grow into really big trees. They will be put into the shade houses that are on our school grounds, and looked after. When they get bigger they will be transplanted into the community for people to enjoy.

Straw Rocket Making

We had a great time making our straw rockets. We traced around the rocket shape, coloured it in and cut it out. We got another smaller piece of paper that we rolled up. That made a narrow pocket that we taped to the back of the rocket. The straw slipped inside ..... and then we were ready for action! It took a little practise before we could launch our rockets.

The Digger Puzzle is Complete

Check out this puzzle - it took lots of willing helpers, some time and patience. But we did it!!
